Lamadi Clinic

Lamadi is a town and ward in the Busega district of Tanzania. With a regional population of approximately 250,000, many residents lack easy access to healthcare facilities. PSA President Margareth Awiti in the United States has joined together with local doctors and other medical personnel in Tanzania to establish a hospital to serve the region around Lamadi. The Serengeti Alliance, through a generous private foundation grant, is establishing a free and low-cost maternity and pediatric clinic on the site next to the hospital.

The private hospital officially opened in August of 2024 with a visit from the tour of the Uhuru Torch, a national symbol of Tanzania. The torch represents freedom – “uhuru” is Swahili for “freedom” – spreading the spirit of hope throughout the country. The hospital, called the Good Hope Dispensary, provides medical services that include general consultations, vaccinations and health education. The national government has already recognized Good Hope Dispensary and the positive impact it is having on the community with the President of Tanzania acknowledging the “good things” being done through the project. While construction on the clinic continues, the hospital has begun providing care to pregnant women and children, including the first birth of a new baby.

The clinic construction is nearing completion. A solar system must be installed to provide backup power and new medical equipment must be obtained before the facility will be considered operational. The recent installation of a security fence and the preparation of the solar infrastructure took us one step closer to providing critical services to the community. Your continued support will help us reach our financial goals to purchase equipment, including a sonogram, hospital beds, microscopes, and more.

Although the clinic is not yet open, a recent cholera outbreak has put a strain on local medical facilities. We have given permission for the clinic building to be used as a place to help cholera patients quarantine and have a safe place to recover while the hospital building continues to treat other patients. This is just another way this project is helping the people of Tanzania.
